Enugu government clamps down on illegal private schools

The Enugu State government, on Tuesday, August 30, announced the shutting down of all unapproved private primary and secondary schools in the state.

The state commissioner for education, Prof Uche Eze, who made the disclosure said the decision was reached due to the proliferation of sub-standard private schools across the state. He explained that school owners are by law, required to register and seek approval from the ministry of education before commencing operations, however, most of the schools have been found wanting.

He said the ugly development was a source of serious concern to the government and to all stakeholders in the education sector in the state.

The education commissioner advised all the affected persons and schools to abide ‘strictly by the directive in their own interest’ as a forcible closure of the illegal schools will commence two weeks from the date of the announcement.
