Kamarudeen Usman, popularly called Kamuru Usman or The Nigerian Nightmare was born in Auchi, Edo state to a homemaking mother and a father who served in the Nigerian army. Kamaru was born on the 11th of May, 1987, and he had a humble beginning. Just like the majority of everyone in his hometown, Kamuru suffered having to trekk for miles to the stream to get water. He even worked as a farmhand on his family’s farm before his dad, who had gone to the US first-hand, moved him and the rest of the family to the US.

Kamaru’s father- Mohammed Nasiru Usman: Unlike many typical fathers who would have forced their intentions on their children no matter what, Kamaru’s father is praised for letting his son follow his path. Mohammed Usman traveled to the US when Kamaru was just 2. Before he traveled to the US, he worked in the Nigerian Army. He also has involvement in the US Military.

In 2009, Kamaru’s father, Mohammed Nasiru Usman was arrested for multiple counts of health care fraud; to which he was charged a 180-month prison sentence and restitution of $1.3 million.

Kamaru’s Mother- Afishetu P. Usman: At first, Kamaru’s mother didn’t support the fighting career her son had chosen, but she later gave him support as much as she could. Obviously, she would be proud of him today. As a homemaker and teacher, Kamaru’s mother took care of the house together with Kamaru and his siblings.

Kamaru’s siblings: Kamaru has three siblings, two boys and a sister named Kashetu Usman. Much details are not known about two of his siblings, but his younger brother, Mohammed Usman has chosen a career path like his brother. He is also a Martial Artist, although he fights in a different division from Kamaru.

When KAMARU moved to the US to join his dad, he was only a young boy of 8 years old. As a Nigeria, he had issues blending in the US due to language barrier- he couldn’t speak English fluently. However, as a smart and brilliant young child, KAMARU soon catched up with his peers. His education contributed to this.

He attended Bovie High School in Arlington, Texas where he tried his luck with joining the football team. However, he gave up trying after successive injuries.

Following the advice of his high-schools wrestling coach, Kamaru began his foray into wrestling. Wrestling also came with setbacks like his football attempt, as he was consistently beaten by a girl during his early trainings. Not giving up, Kamaru persisted and soon made an impressive record of 53-3 in wrestling at Bovie High School in Arlington, Texas.

Moving on from his high school to William Penn University, Kamaru has gained grit and skill in wrestling. He became an NAIA National qualifier. Not too long from this, Kamaru was transferred to Nebraska University where he achieved another feat in his wrestling career. Together with the school’s wrestling team, Kamaru was able to achieve an outstanding feat of helping the school win the first over-all team title in 2008. Going onwards, he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II national title in 2010 and became a member of the University World Team for freestyle wrestling that same year.

While in Nebraska, his wrestling coach found the name Kamarudeen a bit difficult to pronounce. So, he nicknamed him ‘Marty’. Kamaru Usman is also known as ‘Marty from Nebraska’.

More Successful Career Feats: Kamaru’s Rise To Prominence

To improve his chances of making a living out of wrestling, Kamaru USMAN became a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. This decision was largely influenced from his conversation with former UFC lightweight champion, Richard Evans.

Unlike his second attempt at MMA fighting which he lost, Kamaru Usman’s debut fight was a huge win. He won against David Glover in November, 2012 at RFA 5 in Nebraska. However, undaunted by his loss in his second fight with Jose Caceres, Kamaru kept on fighting with MMA. He rose from fighting at just regional promotions to ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ also known as the breeding ground for UFC Fighters.

While fighting at Ultimate Fighters competitions, Kamaru Usman established himself as a force to be reckoned with as he won multiple victories. He was able to defeat Haydar Hassan in July 2015 to secure a six-figure contract with the UFC.

Other fighting victories by Kamaru Usman:

  • Usman defeated Alexander Yakovlev at UFC on Fox 20 (unanimous decision);
  •  He took over Warlley Alves at UFC Fight Night 100 (unanimous decision).
  • Then, he bagged the victory against Sean Strickland at UFC 210 (unanimous decision).
  • He won UFC Fight Night 116 against Sérgio Moraes (knockout in the first round).
  • Afterward, Usman pinned Emil Weber Meek at UFC Fight Night 124 (unanimous decision).
  • Usman toppled down Demian Maia at UFC Fight Night 129 (unanimous decision).
  • At the Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale, Usman faced Rafael dos Anjos winning him by unanimous decision, which gained him the Performance of the Night award.
  • He toppled Jorge Masvidal in the UFC 251  UFC Fight Island.
