Larry Wheels grew up in the Bronx, New York, facing abject poverty in his early years. Despite the hardships, he displayed an early interest in weightlifting, which he started at the age of 14. Initially, he had to make do with a simple setup, using a broomstick and cinder blocks. Unfortunately, due to a lack of suitable schools nearby, Larry had to drop out of school at a young age, which led him to move to the Caribbean island of St. Martin to live with his mother.

During his time in St. Martin, Larry improvised a makeshift weightlifting station with cinder blocks and a broom due to financial constraints. At 15, he wanted to join a gym, but the age restrictions on the island prevented him from doing so until he returned to the Bronx with his mother.
